What equipment do I need to start a podcast?

Setting up your studio, microphone & video cameras is one of the most important elements to get right to ensure great audio quality for your podcast.

Given there are many different pieces of equipment which are advertised to podcast hosts, we’ve shortlisted the most important ones for you.

Microphone

Investing in a high-quality microphone will pay dividends by ensuring your podcast audio is crisp & clear. There are many different options on the market, however, the microphone we consider to be the best only costs £75. Contact us to find out more.

Microphone boom arm

Investing in a microphone boom arm will help you sit more comfortably during your recordings. They’re adjustable so can help your posture & ensure you’re not leaning into the microphone too much. A simple solution to avoid stacks of books.

Video camera

If you are recording remotely, you can use the in-built front-facing camera on your laptop or desktop computer. If you choose to record in-person in a studio, you’ll need to invest in 2 to 3 cameras to cover different angles for both you & your guest to optimise the visuals.

Pop filter

While not essential, pop filters can help reduce popping sounds & plosives when speaking into your microphone. This can help improve the quality of your audio & make your episodes easier to edit as you’ll have fewer segments to remove.

Laptop stand

Investing in a laptop stand will ensure you have your laptop screen angled to head height so you’re not looking down. A laptop riser can be moved up or down depending on the position of your chair, meaning you’ll be comfortable & looking directly at the camera during the recording.
